Adopting GEMS is part of our commitment to building a smarter, more sustainable logistics operation. It is a practical tool that supports both business and environmental goals.”
– Andy Poh, Managing Director, PAL Line Pte Ltd
This was the reality for PAL Line, a trusted logistics and warehousing provider in Singapore. Since 2008, the company has built a reputation for dependable freight forwarding, transportation, and storage services. Behind the scenes, their operations run on a complex system of lighting, cold rooms, charging areas for electric forklifts, container cold storage, and IT infrastructure.
These systems keep the business moving but they also consume significant energy. Each month, a high electricity bill would arrive, with no clear explanation of where the energy was going or how to reduce it.
They assumed it was the lighting or air conditioning, but without accurate data, those were just guesses. Despite their strong operational performance, the team at PAL Line felt like they were operating in the dark when it came to energy management.
Like many growing logistics businesses, PAL Line faced these challenges:
Energy usage could only be seen after the monthly bill arrived
There was no way to identify which equipment or areas were driving consumption
Facilities and operations teams had no baseline to track or measure progress
Manual reporting was tedious and error prone, especially for sustainability reviews
These limitations made it difficult to take action or invest in improvements with confidence. It is hard to improve what you cannot see, and that was the biggest barrier for PAL Line.
Things changed when PAL Line partnered with Cheng Seng Electric to implement GEMS (Green Energy Monitoring System).
Built specifically for commercial and industrial buildings in Singapore, GEMS provides real time energy monitoring, intelligent visualisation, and automated reporting, all supported by licensed in-house LEWs.
GEMS was professionally installed across key circuits in PAL Line’s building, capturing data on voltage, current, and energy flows. Within days, the team had access to real-time energy usage data that had never been available before.
To help PAL Line focus on what matters most, GEMS delivered a fully customised energy dashboard, designed to align with their operational priorities and sustainability goals. The dashboard includes:
A 14-day heat map showing energy intensity across hours and days. This helps to identify peak usage times and unusual activity.
A Lighting Power Density chart benchmarked against Green Mark platinum standards, so the team can keep track of certification readiness.
Daily energy cost breakdown by category (e.g. power, lighting, aircon, forklift chargers), showing exactly how much is spent on each area.
Real-time statistics on carbon emissions and total daily consumption, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability
The dashboard is not just for management. It’s also viewable by all staff, helping to create awareness and shape daily habits by showing the real cost of energy usage.
With GEMS, the entire team knows how much is being spent on energy use, and where. That awareness has made the team more conscious about how they use energy across the site.
GEMS did not just display numbers. It helped the PAL Line team understand the story behind their energy usage: when, where, and why consumption was rising, and what could be done about it.
Now the company is able to:
Respond to anomalies early before costs spiral
Prioritise actions based on facts, not assumptions
Build energy saving initiatives grounded in real-time data
Confidently support ESG goals and prepare for Green Mark certification
Engage their own staff and customers with visual proof of energy responsibility
Andy recognised that operational performance and sustainability are no longer separate goals. Under his leadership, the company took proactive steps to integrate digital tools like GEMS to improve both.
In 2025, PAL Line was honoured as one of Singapore’s Enterprise 50 companies. This prestigious award recognises local enterprises that demonstrate innovation, resilience, and growth.
This award highlights PAL Line’s commitment not just to excellence in logistics, but to adopting forward thinking practices like real time energy monitoring. It is a clear signal that sustainability and digital transformation are core to the company’s future.
PAL Line’s journey shows that meaningful change starts with clarity. Before GEMS, the team had no data to act on. After GEMS, they had control, visibility, and confidence.
Sustainability does not start with equipment upgrades. It starts with understanding and the willingness to act.
With GEMS, PAL Line has built the foundation to reduce waste, operate more efficiently, and lead by example in Singapore’s logistics sector.
