Singapore EXPO is Singapore’s largest purpose-built meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) venue, managed by Constellar — a leader in delivering connected, world-class event experiences.
With over 123,000 square metres of interconnected indoor and outdoor space, Singapore EXPO is home to business gatherings, consumer exhibitions, and global conferences of all scales. Its iconic halls and meeting rooms are known to serve as a playground of possibilities — flexible and ready for any format.
But with such scale and variety comes a challenge: understanding and managing energy across dozens of dynamic event environments, each with its own consumption profile and operational rhythm.
Singapore EXPO’s energy footprint is vast. From massive air conditioning systems to event rigging, lighting, digital signage and catering systems, the venue faces wide swings in energy consumption depending on the event mix and operational setups.
For a venue aiming to maintain top-tier sustainability standards, traditional utility billing reports were no longer enough.
Constellar needed a system that would deliver:
Real-time, zone-level monitoring of electrical consumption
The ability to track energy usage for each hall independently
Visual dashboards that staff could use to identify inefficiencies
Better data to support ESG commitments and Green Mark performance
To meet these needs, Constellar deployed GEMS (Green Energy Monitoring System), developed and implemented by Cheng Seng Electric.
GEMS allows Constellar’s operations and sustainability teams to:
View real time energy usage by hall and floor, segmented into lighting, general power, and event-connected power
Monitor energy cost impacts based on the scale and setup of events running in each area
Establish baselines and benchmarks to guide long term performance tracking and sustainability goals
Auto generate customised reports for internal teams to review usage trends and make informed decisions
GEMS was deployed with on-site metering, data gateway devices and cloud analytics — all tailored for high-traffic public venues like Singapore EXPO.
To make energy data truly actionable, the GEMS team created two fully customised dashboards for Singapore EXPO. These floorplan-style dashboards allow Constellar to see the live yearly consumption of each hall, complete with color-coded visuals and energy data down to the kWh.
These dashboards are:
Used during daily operations to monitor load by space
Referenced during maintenance and planning meetings
A visible part of Singapore EXPO’s commitment to transparency
Displayed at the operations office for easy monitoring throughout the day
By replacing the traditional need to physically walk to distribution boards to take manual readings, the GEMS dashboards save valuable manpower and time. Displayed at the operations office, the dashboards provide a real-time overview of energy consumption across all halls, allowing facility teams to monitor usage instantly without needing to be on site. This reduces delays, improves responsiveness, and enables better coordination across shifts and departments.
The implementation of the Green Energy Monitoring System (GEMS) represents an important milestone in the Engineering and Facilities Management Department’s broader journey towards data‑driven operations and dashboard‑enabled decision‑making.
By providing real‑time, hall‑level visibility of energy consumption, GEMS has significantly strengthened our ability to manage building operations with greater precision. The enhanced transparency enables faster identification of abnormal energy usage, improves operational responsiveness, and supports more informed planning across diverse event configurations and operating conditions.
The introduction of customised dashboards has also transformed how energy performance is monitored on a day‑to‑day basis. By reducing reliance on manual meter readings, GEMS has streamlined workflows, improved productivity, and allowed our teams to deploy manpower more effectively. More importantly, it has established a consistent and reliable data foundation that supports performance tracking, internal reporting, and continuous improvement.
From a sustainability perspective, the availability of structured, high‑quality energy data has strengthened our governance and oversight. GEMS plays a key role in supporting Singapore EXPO’s ongoing performance against Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy (SLE) requirements, while also enabling clearer benchmarking, accountability, and evidence‑based sustainability reporting.
Overall, GEMS is more than a monitoring tool. It reflects a meaningful evolution in our facilities management approach—where data and dashboards are embedded into daily operations. By enabling timely, data‑driven decision‑making, the system has elevated energy management from a periodic reporting exercise to a core operational capability, contributing to greater efficiency, transparency, and sustainability across the venue.

Singapore EXPO has already achieved the BCA Green Mark Platinum — Super Low Energy among other major certifications. With GEMS, the venue adds the next layer of sustainability reporting — combining real-time energy tracking with clear insights that align with Green Mark’s ongoing performance criteria.
This is especially relevant as the venue continues to:
Benchmark performance over time
Pursue grant funding or awards that require quantifiable data
Support clients who seek sustainable venues for their events
Maintain leadership in Asia’s growing green MICE economy
With GEMS, Singapore EXPO moves from reactive reporting to real-time energy control.
The operations team can now:
See which halls are driving consumption on a daily basis
Track cost and usage across different event types
Engage staff and contractors in meaningful change
This is energy management not as a backend task, but as a live operational tool.
In a sector where sustainability and service are equally important, GEMS helps Singapore EXPO achieve both. By giving the team the ability to see, respond and plan with real energy data, the platform helps drive smarter decisions — operationally and environmentally.
